why does maxdb need to be installed as root?

Subject says it all :-) I have to install MaxDB on Solaris and the installer balks unless I run it as root. Why?

The only installer that I will run as root is pkgadd, apt-get, dpkg, or rpm :) Custom installers that want to run as root make me very nervous. Why not distribute MaxDB as a standard Solaris package? pkgadd is far more sysadmin friendly (read: transparent) than a GUI installer.

thanks for listening :-)

Re: why does maxdb need to be installed as root?

I'd prefer that, too. There is a Debian port you might look into. You can contact Martin Kittel <debian@martin-kittel.de> for information about what changes he made.

Also, the installer just untars the .tgz files that are distributed with the package, I think.

I don't know much about it, so I'd check in with Martin for more specifics.

Thanks for the comment,

Installation problems - SWT

I read your article (Part IV) but I am still struggling to get Sync Mgr running (on Win2K). I followed the instructions on the MaxDB site but cannot locate Libswt-*.dll. I translated what you had into Windows but still no luck. I get the message "Cannot find the Main class. Program will exit". Have you any ideas? You can reply to challjust4dentalcom. Thanks.

Re: Installation problems - SWT

It's good to hear folks are reading the article! Thanks for writing.

I have no experience installing on windows, but I will do what I can :)

Have you grabbed the Eclipse SDK for windows and acquired the SWT libraries from it?
